Filtration Technique

The process of separating insoluble substances from a liquid, using a filter , generally a filter paper is called filtration. The liquid is allowed to pass through a filter paper. A circular filter paper is folded into a semicircle and then into a quarter-circle. This gives a conical shape to the filter paper. The filter paper is then fitted into a conical funnel. The mixture is poured into the funnel slowly by the side of a glass rod. The liquid passes through the fine pores of the filter paper and is collected in a beaker, while the solid particles are blocked and collected on the filter paper. The filtered liquid is called filtrate and the solid particles collected on the filter paper are called residue. From a mixture of sand and water, sand can be separated by this method. The liquid so collected is called the "Filtrate". The insoluble solid left behind at the filter paper is called "Residue".  The method of filtration is based on the difference in size of particles.

Tea strainer has a wire mesh in it that acts as a filter. The liquid tea passes through the small holes and used tea leaves are left in the tea strainer. The particles of mud are too small and can pass through the holes along with water. For this, we need a fine filter such as filter paper. A filter paper is a piece of special paper that has millions of tiny holes in it.

Uses of filtration at homes:

  • Fruits and vegetables: Juices are usually filtered to separate seeds and pulp.
  • For making paneer, lemon is added to the boiling milk. It forms a mixture that consists of particles of solid paneer and a liquid. The paneer is then separated from the liquid through a fine filtering cloth or a strainer.
